(England)

I have had CD for 7 years but its was only confirmed 12 months ago. My specialist has given me a cupboard full of meds but I refuse to take them due to the side effects. I'm in constant agony and its really gettin me down.
Does any one have any suggestions? Please don't suggest the meds. I get it all the time from my boyfriend and mother.

Crohn's and Pain NEW
by: Annette

Hello there,

I am sorry to hear that you are in a lot of pain. Crohn’s is a horrible disease and can be an extremely painful one, changing your life completely. It can be very distressing for the sufferer and for the family and friends who will be no doubt greatly concerned and will feel helpless.

I do understand why you don’t want to take medication – all medication has side-effects and sadly that’s the truth of the matter but, those medications may well save your life. It's a case of how much pain can and should you endure?

I am all for natural cures and I would much prefer to take something natural than to take a prescribed medicine however, to the best of my knowledge, there is nothing that will alleviate the problem in the way that the medication can. Your prescribed meds will give you a chance to get your life back on track.

Crohn’s disease is not going to go away.
There is no known cure for it. It’s an aggressive disease that gnaws away at you.

There are things that you can do holistically but you are still likely to be in pain. Nutritionally, depending on how crohn’s affects you, you may not have enough nutrients going into your system and can become malnourished or anemic if you end up with fissures and lose blood.

Do cut out fast food and anything that is spicy or dairy products as these can trigger off a worse attack. Avoid smoking and alcohol. By eliminating some of these things from your diet/day to day life, you hopefully will feel a bit better but, you also need to establish a good sleep pattern and on good days, have a little bit of exercise.

You can use meditation for stress management purposes as stress can make your condition worse and you can exercise your body gently using techniques such as yoga which work with your body.
Some people swear by Aloe Vera , whilst others have found it is not good for them.

Ultimately it is your choice but I strongly would advice that you seek further medical help because this is a very serious condition and it can be life-threatening.

I hope this helps and that you are feeling better by the time you read this.

Aloe Vera causes diarrhoea amongst other things. It is not recommended for Crohn's patients with active disease. It also interacts with certain medications and supplements http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/aloe-vera-index.html

If you don't take your medication your risk of perforation of the bowel, sepsis and perhaps also death is substantially increased. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-perforated-bowel.htm

This, of course, is your perogative. However, it is a bit unfair on your mother and brother to make them watch you commit what amounts to an agonisingly slow, extremely painful and very masochistic suicide.

I also would like to point out that the risks from planned surgery are a lot lower than the risks associated with emergency surgery.

You could do yourself a favour, in the meantime, and eat healthily, omitting all fast food, sweets, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, etc. In addition, educate yourself about the disease and then you will be more able to make the right decisions for yourself. To help you on your way:

Aloe Vera Gel NEW
by: Terri

I was diagnosed with Crohn's after having problems for years with my bowels. I read about the miracle of drinking pure, organic, cold pressed inner gel (only inner gel)aloe vera juice, so I began drinking it,just a couple oz. a day at first. Then up to 8 oz per day. I mix it with a blueberry-pomegranite juice and add some stevia for sweetness. The brand I use is sold at Walmart in the fiber section. It has worked wonders for me. Read about it on "Benefits of Aloe Vera" Website. It is good for you in so many ways and I hope it will work for you. It takes a few weeks before you notice it, but you will have alot less gas right away. God Bless, Ter
