imuran for crohns

by John
(Arizona)

My 24 year old son was recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease. He has been on Flagyl, Cipro, Pentasa and Prednisone for a couple of months. Today the doctor started him on Imuran.

Any comments on Imuran therapy? Reading the side effect profile is pretty scary.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

it can work NEW
by: Kat

I have been on Imuran for about 3 years now and I have not had many side effects apart from being more susceptible to sun burn. The doctors regularly monitor my liver function through blood tests to make sure the dosage isnt too high/affecting my liver.
Since my diagnosis in 2005 when I was nearly 11, I have been on most of the same medications as your son. Imuran didnt really work until my surgery. But even now it is acompanied with a half enteral nutrition diet.
Good luck :)

imuran is not remicade NEW

Imuran and Remicade are two completelyyyy different treatments. I was on remicade in the past. It gave me a reaction called Serum sickness. Now I am on Imuran.

Are you confusing Imuran (Azathioprine) with
Remicade (Infliximab) or are you taking both drugs?

Imuran and Crohn's NEW
by: Lori

Regarding your concern about Imuran.....I just started Imuran (Remicade) in Nov. 2011 for Crohn's. I've had Crohn's for over 20 years now and have had two bowel resections. This past fall my dr. said I needed Remicade to get rid of an access and help heal a new 8 inch section of Crohn's. I was very skeptical of this drug. In fact, my dr. tried to get me to take it for at least a year and I kept saying NO! I felt I was running out of options and decided to give it a try. I must say it's going well. The infusions went smoothly...just takes about three hours of my time. The only side effect I feel is I get really hot occasionally and other times I get really cold! Aside from that it seems to give me an energy boost which I need desperately. Research the drug online over and over again and talk to your dr. at length about the possible side effects and how they think it might help you....your specific case.

Believe me...I was totally against this drug and I finally gave in. I will start maintenance doses in February and I hope it works fully for me....And I hope for you too if you decide to jump in! Good luck!
