Teenager with Crohns

Hey Im glade i found this site! I need help with getting along with chrons! I was diagnosed when I was 15 and Im 19 now. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that is around my age that I could talk to!

Hi there,
I am sure you must feel really isolated. 19 is quite young to have Crohn's but it can affect any age group and it is quite likely that there are many people around your age range in your local area who suffer too and you just wouldn't know that they suffer from this condition.

This is because Crohn's has an isolating impact on people. It's certainly not something that most people want to talk about as it's no fun to talk about severe abdominal pains, diarrhea, nausea or any of the other Crohn's related topics.

Many people are embarrassed by this condition although it is no-one's fault. Many people try to hide it from their work colleagues or friends and actually give into the secrecy, but of course this just makes sure that people generally do not understand the condition.

Of course it is hard to hide it sometimes unless you shut yourself away but it is easy to become depressed if you do become isolated and segregated from others.

I would suggest that you talk to people - your friends, family and people at work about the condition. They are likely to be much more understanding if you do so. If you can take the mystery out of the disease, you are one step nearer to controlling it rather than it to control you.

I suspect there are a lot of people that you know who have varying degrees of this disease and you will feel less isolated when you can chat to others and have a support system in place.
