Hello, I understand your pain. My son is 17 years old and he has been diagnosed with crohn's since he was 13. First they told him Ulcerative Colitis . He went through endoscopy, colonoscopy and the Xray test by drinking white liquid " the nurse explained it in her comment". Prednazone, 5 Asas which your son is taking never helped my son. actually he bled more and lost a lot of weight. He has been taking 6 mercaptipurine, Lialda and metronidazole, this combination helped him for a while. The 6 mercaptipurine is a chemo that can be taken as a low dose. It takes 4 to six months for this medicine to kick in. Now my son was bleeding recently and was in pain so I took him out of college for a Remicade treatment which stopped the bleeding. This treatment is intervinously. First you have to know for sure if your son has the crohn's then you will have options. My son is trying Humera which is similar to Remicade but it can be taken at home as a needle or a pen. these two medications should not be taken with 6 mp(mercaptipurine) because reseach says it might cause cancer. My son is not skinny because he takes a lot of protien shakes and he excercise at the gym. This helped his weight and gave him energy. Good luck and may God be with our children... clara

Hi there..I know your pain. The surest way to diagnose Crohn's disease is with a barium swallow with a Gi followthrough. All this means is you have the xrays taken of your stomach but then wait for several hrs and have pics taken as the barium goes thru the entire small and large bowel. The barium will show up any abnormalities in the small bowel where crohn's is most often found. As for the fistula, have him rest and put him on a low residue diet with lots of fluids. It should abate but he also should have his hemogloblin checked for anemia from blood loss. I have had small bowel crohn's disease for 15 years and I am a registered nurse from Canada. Good luck and keep your faith. Janette
