My son's and I

I have CD and Colitis for 11 yrs. I have controlled it by going into Ketosis. No longer working. I started Humira after having a lot of side effects from the pills. I started my 4 injections 1 week ago and have 2 more next week then on maintenance. Losing alot of hair. Anyone else having that problem?

Crohn's Disease NEW
by: Annette Young

Hello,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, all medication can produce negative side-effects and I have heard many people on various Crohn's disease medications who have experienced side-effects as well.

I would always suggest that you go back to your doctor when you have any concerns because there may be other medications that you can try instead and that suit you more.

Typically, side-effects – depending on the type of medication can include weight gain, and increased vulnerability to succumbing to infections, bone weakening or thinning and face swelling, nausea and vomiting. None of these are nice so this is why medication is trial and error and has to be matched to the individual.Your doctors may not prescribe the right things at first.

I come from a natural health background however, having said that, I am still a strong believer that when dealing with any incurable disease such as Crohn's, you should try prescribed medication that can help to keep it under control. I know the side-effects are really not pleasant but the alternative can be that the Crohn's disease escalates out of control and this can lead to all sorts of problems.

I would go back to the doctor and explain about the side-effects that you are having and confirm whether it is in fact to do with the Crohn's medication. Ask if there is an alternative medication that you can be on.

There is much that you can do for yourself as well, make sure that you have a really good diet but one that is easy to digest. Keep it simple and spice free. I know that's no fun especially if you are a lover of spicy foods, but basic foods such as soups, mashed potatoes and pureed bananas can be really good. These are just examples and you can be as creative as you like in the kitchen just make sure that the food is easy to digest. Make sure that you are not smoking or drinking alcohol as these are triggers and stay away from carbonated drinks as much as possible.

I hope that helps.
Good luck,
Annette

Well the Humira did not work. I ran a fever and was worse than before I started the Drug. Now I am off of the Humira and I am feeling better but the Crohn's is 10 times worse than before starting the Humira. I don't like the stories I have been told about Remicade. Several people ended up in the hospital. I have been taking Fish Oil and Omega 3's for the last 4 years. I did not really see any significant difference for myself.
